As a Council-Manager form of city government, Gatesville has 7 elected council members, one of which is the Mayor. As a policy body, the City Council regularly meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday’s of each month in the City Hall Council Chambers. The City Manager is selected by the city council as the chief executive-administrative officer of city government. One of the City Manager’s responsibilities is to establish an annual budget which is considered by the City Council for adoption. Gatesville citizens serve on the Planning and Zoning Board, Board of Adjustments, and Animal Control Board.

Fire and Rescue
The Gatesville Fire Department protects a 287 square mile area of Coryell County which includes Gatesville. The volunteer fire department members are certified through the SFFMA or the Texas Commission on Fire Protection from the Basic level up to the Advanced level. With a staff of 33 full time volunteers and two reservists, they answer approximately 750 calls per calendar year. Equipped with 3 state-of-the –art fire engines, 3 brush fire trucks, a heavy rescue, a mobile command/communication vehicle, an 85 ft. Snorkel, and 2 water tenders, the Gatesville Fire Department is well prepared to provide emergency fire and rescue services. The Fire Department meets every Tuesday at 6pm for 2 to 3 hours of training. Anyone wishing to join the department may come by the station at 109 South 23rd and pick up an application.
The City of Gatesville encompasses a land area of approximately 8.7 miles and is the County Seat of Coryell County. The City also borders the north side of Fort Hood, the largest military base in the world. The police department that serves this community is broken down into three major divisions, Patrol, Investigations, and Administration, and employs 30 full and part-time employees. The employees of the Gatesville Police Department are expected to serve the public with dignity, fairness, and respect.
